What Are YOU Doing This Summer?

Traditionally, the season brings about camping trips, family vacations, barbeques, and—sigh—summer jobs for today’s youth. However, Leader’s Challenge has one more thing that you can add to your calendar—Summer Academy!

Since our inception, Leader’s Challenge has been offering this fun-filled event as the first of many experiences for participating Ignite and Global Challenge students. This year, students will have the opportunity to stay at the beautiful Colorado School of Mines’ campus for 4 days and 3 nights. While on campus, students will engage in small- and large-group activities that will challenge them intellectually and excite them about the upcoming school year. Through these activities, students will be introduced to the knowledge, skills and behaviors that are the keys to leadership and active citizenship, including communication styles, goal setting, and project management. Also, those attending Summer Academy will get the chance to listen to stories and insights of some amazing speakers, including:

  • Katherine Mason – Director; Executive Social Presentation
  • Linnea Myers - Assistant Director; Urban Servants Corp
  • Russ Dalbey – Owner; Russ Dalbey Educational Institute and former Olympic cyclist
  • Jared Polis - Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, and Candidate for US House of Representatives
  • Terrance Carroll - Assistant Majority Leader; Colorado House of Representatives
  • Andrew Romanoff - Speaker of the House; Colorado State Legislature

On top of the educational merits of Summer Academy, students are in for tons of fun as well. All LC programs draw students from a wide variety of communities, schools and life experiences, offering participants the opportunity to make friends from across the Front Range and beyond. Unlike summer camps where goodbyes are exchanged at the end of the event, Ignite and Global Challenge students will reunite with their Academy friends every month throughout the school year during Monthly Challenges and Global Workshops. In addition to fun-filled activities like the Talent Show, LC Olympics, and “Geeks versus Greeks” (you would have to be there to understand), Academy students will share lots of laughs and great memories from the event.

If you're ready for fun and personal growth, Summer Academy is definitely the place to be. The 2008 Ignite Academies are scheduled for July 10-13 and August 2-5; Global Academy is scheduled for August 15-17.
